Hackers VS Crackers.
Right, those of you who read
Ivan's blog, may have noticed that his recent posts have all been about how much he hates "hackers". I resent that because I'm an aspiring hacker myself. Here, the word "hacker" is being used in its original sense as referring to a networking or programming wizard and not as someone who breaks into other people's computers. For more information about what a hacker really is, refer to this

Why is that guy's definition of what a hacker is any more valid than that commonly used today by the media, you might ask? It's because that definition is used by the people who originally coined the term. The correct term for people who break into other people's computers without permission is "cracker" and not hacker. For years, a gross injustice has been perpetrated upon the hacker community by people in the media who do not know what the term really means. One of the reasons is because there are crackers who go around proclaiming themselves to be hackers.
In a nutshell, hackers make things. Crackers break things. So please do not help perpetuate this gross misuse of terms, Ivan. Hackers are highly skilled craftsmen as opposed to kids with nothing better to do than to steal your passwords.
