Hollywood, slow as usual
You just have to laugh when you read stuff like
this. Apparently, there are quite a few new television shows that are supposed to cater to the geek subculture.
Joseph McGinty Nichol (who directed the Chuck pilot:
Hollywood, he said, is playing catch-up with IT culture.
"The classic shape of the computer geek is over when Bill Gates became the (richest), most aspirational, coolest guy in the world," he said. "He is the original thick-glasses, pocket-protector guy. Now who doesn't want to be like Bill Gates?"
The real IT geeks, that's who. How do you expect to woo the geeks without even knowing that? Try Ken Thompson instead. Or Dennis Ritchie. Or Donald Knuth. Or RMS. Or Linus Torvalds. Hell, I'd even take ESR. Bill Gates? Christ, get a clue.
In other news, unless you're planning to give your stuff away, don't use
Creative Commons licenses. Read the fine print, people.
